ECONOMIC, AGRICULTURAL AND SOCIAL IMPACTS OF RURAL – URBAN MIGRATION IN NIGERIA

The article analysed the impacts of rural -urban migration in Nigeria. Historical background to rural – urban migration was given. Categories of people that migrate and causes of rural urban migration were also highlighted .prominent amongst the reasons were state creation in 1967, 1976 , 1987, 1991, and 1996, as well as near absence of social amenities and intfrastructure in the rural areas, etc, Reduction in Agricultural activities in the rural areas and its attendant effects on the Nigerian economy. Repercussions of rural-urban migration on urban centres and cities such as increase in crime rate, urban sanitation crisis, housing shortages, prostitution, etc were analysed. suggestions to heip reduce rural –urban migration to the barest minimum such as provision of more social amenities and infrastructures in the rural areas , increased government support to Agriculture. It was concluded that rural –urban migration has a far reaching effect on both the rural and urban areas and hence Nigeria as a whole. Restructuring of the country such that more powers will be devolved to the local governments , strengthening and improvements of the local government civil service as well as provision of more infrastructures in the rural areas etc were recommended
