Abstract

This review work highlight the complex relationship between supervisors and supervises and how this relationship can be made beneficial; to both parties , the write up is apt because it offers insights into how this complex relationship can be handled for the benefit of both parties, given that many post graduate programmes have been bedevilled with suboptimal results, prolonged stay and even withdrawal from the programme Literature materials on basic concepts such as Supervisors , Supervise, projects, Thesis, Dissertations, Career as well as supervisor- supervises relationships, dynamics and strategies for success were sourced from Journals, Conference papers, books etc, they were collated and there after reviewed and discussed . The supervisor-supervisee relationship in postgraduate research is complex and multifaceted It requires mentorship, compassion, understanding, subordination, patience, respect, hard work, It was concluded that By understanding the dynamics, challenges, and strategies for success, supervisors and supervisees can create a productive and supportive relationship that fosters academic excellence and personal growth. By prioritizing open communication, clear expectations, and mutual respect, both parties can navigate the complexities of this relationship and achieve research excellence. The following recommendations were made 1. Training for supervisors: Provide training for supervisors on effective communication, power dynamics, and conflict resolution.2. Clear guidelines: Establish clear guidelines for supervisors and supervisees, outlining expectations, roles, and responsibilities.3. Regular feedback: Encourage regular feedback between supervisors and supervisees to ensure a shared understanding and address issues promptly.4. Support systems: Establish support systems for supervisees, such as peer support groups or counseling services, to help them navigate the research process.5. Supervisee appraisal of supervisors: Consider implementing a system for supervisees to provide feedback on their supervisors, promoting accountability and continuous improvement. By implementing these recommendations and prioritising a positive supervisor-supervisee relationship, postgraduate research can become more effective, supportive, and productive, ultimately enhancing the research experience for both supervisors and supervisees.
