Abstract

Zircon sand from Bakin ruwa, Toro Local Government Area, Bauchi state, Nigeria was characterized using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The elemental composition of the sample using XRF revealed that the sample contain different elements in weight percentages; zircon 47.38% and silica 10.32%. alkali and rare earth elements also occur in small number (<1%). Oxide composition analysis indicates that elemental oxides were detected; zircon oxide (ZrO2) with highest concentration of 50.888% and silica oxide (SiO2) 36.03%, aluminum oxide (Al2O3) 2.21% with traces of different oxides less than 1%. XRD revealed that the predominant crystalline phases in the sample are Zircon and baddeleyite. Photomicrograph from SEM revealed that some of the grains were broken, rounded, semi rounded, pyramidal and angular. This shows that Bakin ruwa zircon sand is suitable for alumino-silicate refractory bricks production for foundry application.
